What Supplies Do You Need to Get BEFORE You Bring Home a New Puppy?

May 3, 2024

Are you bringing home a new puppy? Congratulations! Bringing home a new puppy is easily one of the most exciting days of your life. There’s so much love, cuddles, and happiness to look forward to. To ensure you’re ready to welcome them home, you must be prepared. This will make their transition into their new home much easier for you and them. Puppies need a lot of supplies to thrive as they grow. We’ve broken down a list of must-have products for your new puppy into six categories. Each one will go through the basics to help your new puppy feel right at home.

Sleep:

It’s essential to establish a space in your house for your puppy that they can call their own. This will be where they go to unwind and go to sleep. You will want to make this space as comfortable as possible for your new puppy as they will spend a lot of time here. We all need places to relax and get comfy, and puppies are no different. Here are all the cozy items we recommend for your pup:

Crates:

Beds:

Blankets:

Mats/puppy pads:

Food:

What you feed your puppy is important for their growing body. We recommend consulting with your veterinarian or canine nutrition specialist to find the proper brand to help your puppy thrive. But if you think we won’t have food-related recommendations, think again. There are lots of great products that can help you in training your pup:

Bowls:

Teething:

Treats:

Slow feeding:

Training:
Training your pup is one of the most important things you will do with them starting on day one. Properly training them will help them develop confidence in the world, strengthen their bond, and, most importantly, teach them what is expected in your home. Here are a couple of items that can help you during the training process:

Bells:

Gates:

Toys:

What they say is true. Puppies don’t play around when it comes to playing around. Setting aside time daily to play and bond with your new puppy is important. You’ll also want them to learn how to entertain themselves when you’re busy; otherwise, they may stir up some trouble. Many enriching toys can make playtime for your puppy even more fun:

Squeaky toys:

Engaging play toys:

Crinkle toys:

Interactive toys:

Recreation:
We’ve said it once, and we’ll say it again: a sleepy puppy is a happy puppy. Giving them the proper amount of exercise is crucial as they grow into adulthood. Your puppy will want to go outside and will love to explore. Here’s what we recommend for making every little walk or stroll through the park a proper adventure for them:

Leashes:

Collars:

Harnesses:

Potty Bags:

Comfort:
This category is a mix of all the others, but it deserves its own spot on this list because (just like young children) your puppy will have items that will give them that extra comfort. We recommend keeping these items (blankets or stuffed animals) on your person for a while to provide them with your scent. Your dog will recognize you in these items and feel even more comforted by them.

Blankets/Minkys:

Plushies:

Sound Machines:

It is important to note that you will go through many supplies initially. This includes blankets, mats, toys, and even beds. We recommend shopping for cheaper items in the beginning and then splurging on nicer items when your puppy is closer to fully grown and has made significant progress in their training.

We hope you find this list helpful as you prepare to welcome home your new puppy. By incorporating these supplies into your pet preparation before you bring them home, you’ll have more time to bond with your new pup. That said, it’s important to know that your puppy’s needs will change as they grow. Check-in with your vet or nutritionist about the best food options and other supplies your dog will need as they enter different phases of their life.
