A question that we often get at Little Teton Doodles is “Do doodle dogs shed?” and “Are they hypoallergenic?” In this article, we’ll answer both these questions using research, as well as our years of experience as doodle breeders. So, if you’re wondering if doodles shed or are hypoallergenic, then keep reading. We want to help you find the right furbaby for you!

Looking for a hypoallergenic dog? You’re in the right place!

So, first things first. Let’s define hypoallergenic. Hypoallergenic means something that is unlikely to cause allergies or an allergic reaction. So when it comes to furbabies, hypoallergenic means that they don’t cause:

  • Sneezing
  • Bumps or welts
  • A runny nose
  • Itchy eyes
  • Coughing
  • Hard time breathing

These are just some of the signs of allergies that hypoallergenic dogs are supposed to not cause. As you can see, allergies to dogs might be a concern if you’re worried about having an allergic reaction.

Doodle 101: Things You Gotta Know About This Type of Dog

The simplest way to answer whether doodle dogs are hypoallergenic is keeping in mind that there is no furbaby that is 100% hypoallergenic. That means that there are no guarantees that if you are allergic to dogs, that doodles are the “cure-all” and are “100% hypoallergenic.” The Vet Street, an organization that helps you find veterinarians, argues that there are no furbabies (dogs or cats) that are 100% hypoallergenic because all pets have “dander, saliva and urine” which carry allergens.

But, what we do know from research and experience is that some doodles are the most hypoallergenic type of dogs. They usually are the most friendly for those who struggle with allergies to pets. Keep in mind that there are many options when it comes to doodles. There are goldendoodles, cavapoos, bernedoodles, labradoodles, maltipoos, and so many more. That means you’re not limited in choosing the type of doodle that is allergy-friendly than other types of furbabies. You also don’t need to worry about not being able to not have a pet if you speak with the right type of breeder who can help you choose a furbaby that’s right for you.

Doodle Dogs & Shedding

This answer like the one above is: there is no dog type that does not shed. All pups, like humans, shed. For example, if you were to brush your hair, you would naturally shed some hair. Likewise, although doodles don’t shed as much as other dogs, they do shed to some level. That is, shedding is natural.

But the great thing about doodles is that the curlier the coat type, the less likely that the doodle will shed. So, when meeting your doodle for the first time, make sure to take into account their coat and curl pattern.
